A very successful Climbing Conversion Course
In the glorious Peak District, I met with Jordan and Jack – two Londoners with a fair amount of indoor climbing experience but very little on real rock. They chose Redpoint Adventure’s Rock Climbing Conversion Course because they wanted the next step, the next challenge, but in a safe and secure environment.
Jordan hadn’t climbed outdoors in five years, whilst Jack had never ventured onto real rock before, and hadn’t belayed anyone in over six years. However, by the end of our two days together, both were competent climbers, safe and secure and had both even led their first climb, which was a huge achievement in such a short time!
To start with we headed for a short and simple crag, where we set up a top rope so that we could refresh our personal climbing, abseiling and belaying skills. This truly is the foundation of all climbing so we took our time, but it certainly paid off during the rest of the weekend.
After that, we introduced the methods and processes behind trad climbing. We discussed the placing of gear, the IDEAS acronym for setting up a belay stance and the extra precautions you need to take surrounding leading. Once we’d climbed a simple route, Jordan then led it by himself, with an additional safety rope just in case.
Jack followed suit with his first lead and after a bit of practice, we were like a well oiled machine!
We concluded our excellent and highly successful weekend with a more challenging and much more adventurous multi-pitch route, which involved us climbing out of a beautiful silver birch forest for incredible views of the Peak District!
It really was a stunning weekend. Jack and Jordan climbed brilliantly and are now capable of safely climbing by themselves wherever their adventures may take them…
